According to Pink Floyd song “Mother”, mothers can be a little overprotective withoutknowing sometimes, but in this particular case, it does make a difference.Like all the songson the album The Wall, "Mother" is part of the story of Pink, the protagonist of the album. The song narrates a conversation of Pink expressed by Rogers Waters, and his mothermanifested by Gilmour. The listener may realize that the mother is helping to build the wallthat leaves Pink very ill for trying to protect her child from the outside world. It is a criticism ofoverprotective mothers who believe they are doing good and do not realize that they takethe liberty of their children and cause them damage in the personality and in the emotionalaspect.
Roger Waters statement says that Pink is mentally ill because of all the traumas he hadsuffered in the past: Like his father`s death in the Second World War, his mother`soverprotection, the oppression of British education, love failures, the pressure of beingfamous figure in the music industry, his controversial use of drugs adding up his asthma, etc.
All though, all the examples previously mentioned are like “bricks of the wall” (metaphoricallyspeaking) he has created to isolate himself of the real world, his mother has helped him bystarting to create this imaginary wall that it leads him to a world of self-destructive fantasy. Without intentions, she has created a misconception that absolutely everything that existsoutside of it, is going to hurt and anything new has to be approved or there will be seriousconsequences.
From the first moment The Wall was released, many critics and even fans have questionedRoger Waters about the meaning and history behind "Mother", to which the musician has always replied that the lyrics play one or two points that they remind her of her own mother, but the ultimate purpose of the composition is to make people see that everyone, up to a certain level, can accuse mothers of overprotecting their children, often in an exaggeratedway.
Anyway, as to conclude with this famous and controversial song, since the day it wasreleased, "Mother" has become a key point that reflects the problems that an individual can have by letting his mother "build a wall" around his life and not let him live up to what theworld offers.
